Air Space
The air space is the distance between the panes of glass in
a sealed unit. The air space cavity is filled with an inert gas,
like air or argon gas fills.
Argon Gas Fill
Argon is a colourless, odourless, non-flammable, non-reactive,
inert gas. Argon gas fills are used to reduce heat loss in sealed
units by slowing down convection in the air space. Argon gas is
very cost efficient, and works in unison with Low E coated glazing.
Awning Window
An operating style of window that use a sash hinged on the sides
that swings open at the bottom towards the exterior. Awning operators
are especially suited for rooms that require a venting unit, even
during rain or snow.
Bay Window
Bay windows are a style of window assembly that consists of
central unit joined to two side windows, which are set at a 30 o
or 45o angle. Bays windows are perfect for adding floor space and
increasing the size of bedroom and living rooms.
Bow Window
Bow windows are a style of window assembly consisting of four
or more window units attached at small angles to each other. Bow
windows give an impression of a curve and are ideal for increasing
a living or dining rooms dimensions.
Casement Window
Casements are operating windows that have a sash hinged at the
top and bottom, which swings open a side towards the exterior (like
a door) to create a venting unit. Casement operators provide the
most venting of all the operating windows, and are easy to clean
from the inside of the room.
Double Hung
Double Hung window are operating windows that vent using two
sashes. One sash on the top half, and one on the bottom half, which
slide up and down to provide ventilation. Double hung windows provide
a more traditional style of windows. Both sashes tilt inwards for
easy cleaning.
Dual Pane
A glass unit consisting of two panes of glass held together
by a sealant and a spacer, forming a sealed unit.
Fixed Window
A fixed window is a non-venting style that uses a fixed sash.
Fixed windows are typically used when joined beside an operating
window to keep a more balanced appearance.
Frame
The perimeter material of a window or door that consists of
a head at top, sill at bottom and two jambs at the sides.
Glazing
Glazing is the process of installing a sealed unit into a frame
or sash of a window. Glazing also refers to the type of glass used
to make the sealed unit.
Slider Window
A slider is an operating window that uses a sash that slides
across to vent. Gliders are the most cost effective style of venting
unit.
Grills
Grills are decorative bars mounted between the glass panes inside
a sealed unit. Grills are available in different shapes.
Insulating Glass (IG)
Insulated glass units (IG or IGU) are a combination of two or
more panes of glass sealed together using a spacer bar in a factory
controlled environment. The sealed unit has an optimum air space
which is filled with a gas fill such as air or argon gas, and produces
a higher insulating glass panel.
Jamb
Jamb(s) are the side components making up the window or a door
frame.
Laminated Glass
Laminate glass is a type of safety glass comprising of two pieces
of glass with a clear vinyl interlay. This glass may break under
impact, but typically remains integral. Splinters and sharp fragments
adhere to the interlay. Laminated glass is ideal for area's where
someone might fall against the glass, or to prevent forced entry.
Low E
Low E is a coating applied to one side of a glass pane to reduce
it's emissivity. All Weather Clear Performance Low E uses silver
oxide for a highly transparent, and low reflectivity low emissivity
coating on our heat systems glazing.
Patio Door
A patio door is a sliding entryway comprising of at least one
operating sash panel and one fixed panel which hold sealed units.
Patio doors are also available in three or four wide units.
Picture Window
Picture windows are non-operating windows with a sealed unit set
directly into the frame (no sash). Picture windows provide a maximum
glass viewing area and can be combined with other operating windows.
Sash
A sash is the part of a window that holds the sealed unit and
opens on venting units.
Sill
The bottom frame component of a door or window frame.
Tempered Glass
Glass that is tempered has been heat-treated to become more
than three times stronger than regular glass. Tempered glass shatters
into thousands of pieces when broken, preventing the typical sharp
edges of untempered glass. Tempered glass is ideal for high security
areas (door glazing) and high abuse.
Weather-stripping
Weather-stripping are used as sealed between moving or replaceable
parts, to prevent air and water leakage.
